If you haven’t figured out by now, I am a Pinterest Enthusiast! (And, to be fair, I guess you’d only know that if you are following along on insta.) I absolutely LOVE Pinterest and I decided to do a 2 part blog series surrounding the platform. In this particular blog post, I’ll be diving into how I use Pinterest and why I truly believe it’s the number one source of inspiration for all things home.

Before we begin though, let’s ensure we’re Pin Pals. Click here to follow Spirit & Feathers on Pinterest.

What is Pinterest

Pinterest is a visual search engine and serves as a creative outlet for people to bookmark or save ideas and interest as well as post original content to the tune of over 300 million active users world wide! Some may argue that it can be categorized as a social media channel while others may disagree, but at any rate, it’s a mega visual discovery tool with evergreen content accessible to millions.

How It Works

Pinterest allows users with accounts to post or bookmark or  visuals including images or videos which are known as pins. These pins compose a theme-based virtual photo album or gallery known as a “board”. When a user saves a visual  to their Pinterest account, it becomes a Pin.

  1. Make It Your Own

To begin with, you can make Pinterest your own. Once you create a Pinterest account, you have the ability to create boards and customize your boards on your account to your user preference. Your boards can be public with the ability for the million of users to access your boards or you can keep it private/confidential where users are unable to view your pins on the board. In terms of the type of boards composed of your account you can also customize that too. For instance, if the style you’re aiming for is modern farmhouse you find that having a modern farmhouse board for each room of your home works or maybe you’ll stick to one.  As well, you can make your boards very specific and granular which you’ll find is more of the route I decided to take for the Spirit & Feathers Pinterest account. But on the other hand, should you choose you, you can make your boards more broad and general. I’ve even seen boards where it’s a melting pot of several different focuses which I wouldn’t particularly recommend, but if it works for the user by all means proceed. My point is, you can truly make it a personable user experience.

2. Infinite Inspiration

Pinterest is filled with tons of inspiration! Whether you’re renovating your home, tackling a flip project, narrowing your style for a new build or trying to add charm to your rental property, the platform is loaded with images for inspiration. In terms of style, you can run the gamut of all styles and find exactly what you’re looking for: moden, minimal, contemporary, traditional, etc. As well, the spectrum of origin of these images could range from DIY users who’ve uploaded their content to professional interior designers or contractors. I passively began using Pinterest early last year as we neared our home closing date and became more active on the platform early fall 2019. Instagram will always have a special place in my heart but as I continue along the journey of customizing our builder grade home, I find myself more inclined to go to Pinterest and source inspiration there.

3. Pinterest Empowers

The last and certainly not least reason why I am a huge fan of Pinterest is because it empowers. More times than none, you’ll find that many of the original pins on Pinterest are from people who decided to just go for it! Pseudo professionals are what I like to call ‘em. Their moms, dads, wife, girlfriends, boyfriends who are tackling do-it-yourself projects fearlessly and CRUSHING IT! Like me, most are undertaking home projects as a hobby and fall within the family of bloggers sharing their tips, tricks and transparency on how they achieved each completed project. While I am heavily inspired when I come across the DIY-ers of Pinterest, I feel completely empowered with resources found on Pinterest to grab the bull by the horns and plunge into my own home projects.

I hope you enjoyed part 1 of the Power of Pinterest series and stay tuned for part 2 dedicated to my interior designer tribe. It’s coming soon….

xx

Sam
